There are lots of things I should be blogging about, and, quite frankly, I should be blogging a lot more than I have been (sorry about that). I am working on a great one about a fabulous fair trade alcohol company, and some fun beauty pieces too, but today I couldn't not blog about the US Election.
Whilst many of us may not be fully aware of all of the politics (it's not our country after all), we are all hyper aware of who was running to become the 45th President of the United States. I've seen a lot of stories that have cast Hillary Clinton in a bad light, and perhaps she was the lesser of two evils, but honestly America, what have you done?! We can't know if Hillary Clinton would have made a good President, and of course she shouldn't have been elected purely on the basis that she is a woman, but it is amazing that she was in the running and it is a great inspiration to young girls to see that women can be in power. However, America have now elected a sexist, racist misogynist who will almost certainly promote the fact that women cannot be in power. Not only this, but it seems to me that President Trump (this looks, sounds and feels plain wrong - say it over again to yourself) has mocked the people of America countless amounts of times. In 1998 in an interview with People Magazine, he said that if he ever ran, he would run as a Republican as "they're the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they'd still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific." Worryingly enough, this is exactly what he did. When the USA elected President Obama in 2009 I think the world thought, 'we are finally heading in the right direction', but now we have taken huge leaps back. I am starting to despair of the people in this world, we should be so much more forward thinking in this day and age, but with Brexit and now this, I am concerned that we are all still just neanderthals trying to understand what makes fire and how to make the wheel. The UK definitely started it with Brexit; a referendum that nobody really wanted and the majority (so it was reported afterwards) did not understand. People didn't know what they were voting for or how it would effect the country. We still don't of course until Article 50 is triggered, but my take on it is that the majority of 'leavers' voted to leave the EU mainly due to immigration. The fact that UKIP have been allowed to hold seats in parliament beggars belief; a party whose previous leader, Nigel Farage, is - in my opinion - (one of) the dictionary definitions of a racist, sexist, corrupt and irresponsible 'politician'. We appear to be going backwards by allowing people with these antiquated and archaic views to be part of the government who run our country. Now America have followed suit by allowing the man who told a lawyer during a court case that she was "disgusting" when she asked for a medical break to pump breast milk for her three month old to run their country. A man who has stated that if his daughter wasn't his daughter he would probably be dating her. A man who thinks that "it doesn't matter what the media write as long as you've got a young and beautiful piece of ass." Someone so self-important and self-obsessed that he said "all of the women on The Apprentice flirted with me - consciously or unconsciously. That's to be expected." And finally the man who would have needed Latino and Hispanic votes to win the election said "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending the best. They're sending people that have lots of problems and they're bringing those problems with them. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists...And some, I assume are good people." That from the man whose first wife accused him of raping her. At least he was right when he said this "One of they key problems today is that politics is such a disgrace. Good people don’t go into government" No, they don't. Congratulations America, welcome to your new "land of the free".
